Welcome to Eye Doctors of Washington (EDOW), an academically oriented private practice offering comprehensive eye care with a focus on world-class glaucoma treatment.

Founded more than forty years ago by a core group of professors from the Center for Sight at Georgetown University, EDOW has gained a national and international reputation for excellence in eye care, research, and teaching. The center is equipped with some of the most technologically advanced equipment available today, including the Humphrey Visual Field (HVF) and Heidelberg Retinal Tomographer (HRT) for glaucoma diagnosis, as well as state-of-the-art laser technology for glaucoma procedures.

Our Glaucoma Specialists

Douglas E. Gaasterland, M.D.

Dr. Douglas Gaasterland is an internationally renowned specialist in the treatment of glaucoma and anterior segment disease. He is a Johns Hopkins and Yale University trained ophthalmologist and one of the nation’s foremost researchers in glaucoma treatment. Dr. Gaasterland is:

  • Co-Director of the Advanced Glaucoma Intervention Study (AGIS) - now completed
  • Principal Investigator for the Washington DC Clinical Center Consortium for the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS)
  • Associate Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology
  • A scientific reviewer for eight ophthalmic journals
  • A past member of the editorial boards of Lasers and Light in Ophthalmology and Geriatric Ophthalmology

Dr. Gaasterland has extensive training from some of the country’s leading medical institutions. He is a 1965 graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. After an internal medicine internship at Baltimore City Hospitals, he completed residency training in ophthalmology at Yale-New Haven Hospital in 1970. He then moved to the National Eye Institute where he completed fellowship training in glaucoma and clinical research.

Dr. Gaasterland has a long and distinguished career as a practicing ophthalmologist, glaucoma researcher, and instructor. After service in the United States Army, Dr. Gaasterland returned to the National Eye Institute in 1973 as a member of the senior clinical staff, serving as Director of the Glaucoma Research Unit. In 1984, he joined the faculty of the Center for Sight at Georgetown University as Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of Glaucoma and Laser Service. Currently, he is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at both Georgetown University and George Washington University in addition to his private practice.

Dr. Gaasterland has an impressive list of accomplishments and awards to his credit. With an undergraduate degree in engineering, Dr. Gaasterland has been active in the development of lasers for ophthalmic treatment for over 30 years. He holds two patents for ophthalmic laser treatment devices. He is also the author of more than 100 scientific papers and numerous book chapters. In addition, Dr. Gaasterland is an expert in the conduct of controlled clinical trials and has served on numerous national and international glaucoma committees, including chairing the American Academy of Ophthalmology glaucoma panel for the glaucoma Preferred Practice Pattern publication and membership in monitoring committees for multi-center clinical trials for glaucoma. For his many contributions and achievements, Dr. Gaasterland was awarded the Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2002.

Dr. Gaasterland lives in the Washington DC area. In his free time, Dr. Gaasterland enjoys running, fishing, and gardening.

Hylton R. Mayer, M.D.

Hylton R. Mayer MD is a board certified ophthalmologist and a fellowship trained glaucoma specialist. Prior to joining Eye Doctors of Washington, Dr. Mayer was an Assistant Professor at the Yale University School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology, where he was the Director of the Cataract Surgery Section and Glaucoma Fellowship Program Director.

Dr. Mayer is an expert in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma and complex cataracts. He offers the latest medical, laser, and surgical options for patients, including the use of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), the ExPRESS shunt, traditional trabeculectomy, and glaucoma drainage implant surgery. While at Yale, Dr. Mayer was one of the first surgeon’s in Connecticut to perform a new minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, Trabectome.

Dr. Mayer graduated cum laude from Centre College, where he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Societies. While at Centre College, Dr. Mayer was a Division III collegiate soccer player, for which he was recognized as Centre College’s Male Scholar Athlete of the Year and selected to the GTE Academic All-American District Team.

Dr. Mayer is a graduate of the Medical College of Ohio (now the University of Toledo School of Medicine), where he received a Presidential Scholarship and was named to the AOA Honor Medical Society. Dr. Mayer obtained his ophthalmology residency training at the Yale University School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Mayer undertook a fellowship in the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma under the mentorship of internationally renowned glaucoma specialists, Dr. M. Bruce Shields and Dr. James C. Tsai.

After his glaucoma fellowship, Dr. Mayer was asked to join the faculty at Yale. During his time at Yale, Dr. Mayer was responsible for the medical and surgical education of ophthalmology residents and medical students. In addition to being the Director of the Cataract Surgery Section and Glaucoma Fellowship Program Director, Dr. Mayer was also the Director of the Yale Glaucoma Screening Program, Assistant Director of Ophthalmologic Medical Studies, and was active on numerous other academic and clinical committees.

Dr. Mayer has published numerous book chapters, review articles, and original research papers, has been an invited lecturer at numerous regional and national meetings, and is a reviewer for a variety of medical journals. His research interests include ocular public health issues and anti-VEGF agents and glaucoma.

Dr. Mayer lives with his wife, who is a pediatric nephrologist at Inova Fairfax and Georgetown University Hospital, and his three children in Virginia. He enjoys spending time with his family, playing sports of all kinds, puttering around on the guitar.
